Quick chart: degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit

-40 °C = -40 °F

-18 °C = -0.4 °F

0 °C = 32 °F

20 °C = 68 °F

25 °C = 77 °F

37 °C = 98.6 °F

100 °C = 212 °F

180 °C = 356 °F

200 °C = 392 °F

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · K = °C + 273.15. Nothing can be colder than absolute zero: 0 K = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F.

For estimates only. Double-check the numbers before making important decisions.

Temperature conversion formulas

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
K = °C + 273.15
°C = K − 273.15
K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15
°F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32

9/5 is the same as 1.8, so °F = °C × 1.8 + 32. The order matters: when going from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 first, then multiply.

Absolute zero and Kelvin

Absolute zero, 0 K, is the lowest temperature possible. That's why Kelvin values are never negative and are written without a degree sign (300 K, not 300 °K). One kelvin is the same size as one degree Celsius, so a change of 10 °C is also a change of 10 K, and a change of 18 °F.

Common uses

  • Weather forecasts when traveling abroad.
  • Recipes and oven settings from metric cookbooks.
  • Body temperature from a thermometer set to Celsius.
  • Physics, chemistry and engineering, which use Kelvin.

Example

77 °F is 25 °C and 298.15 K. A fever of 100.4 °F is 38 °C. At −40, the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales read the same.

  1. (77 − 32) × 5/9 = 45 × 5/9 = 25 °C
  2. 25 + 273.15 = 298.15 K
  3. (100.4 − 32) × 5/9 = 68.4 × 5/9 = 38 °C
  4. −40 × 9/5 + 32 = −72 + 32 = −40 °F

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying by 9/5 and forgetting to add 32, or subtracting 32 after multiplying instead of before.
  • Converting a temperature difference with the full formula. A rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F.
  • Writing "degrees Kelvin" or using negative Kelvin values. It's just kelvins, and the scale starts at 0.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. For 72 °F: (72 − 32) × 5/9 = 22.22 °C.

What is 0 Kelvin in Fahrenheit?

0 K is −459.67 °F, which is also −273.15 °C. It's absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature.

Is there a quick way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?

Double the Celsius value and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70 °F (the exact answer is 68 °F). For an exact result, multiply by 1.8 and add 32.

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

350 °F is 176.67 °C. Recipes usually round it to 180 °C.

At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?

At −40. −40 °F and −40 °C are exactly the same temperature.

Why can't Kelvin go below zero?

Because 0 K is absolute zero, the point at which particles have the minimum possible energy. There's nothing colder, so the scale has no negative values.
